TheimportanceofhiscontributiontotheliteratureoftheWarcannotbedecidedbythosewho,likemyself,bothadmiredhimasapoetandva露edhimasafriend。Hisconc露sionsaboutWararesoentirelyinaordancewithmyownthatIcannotattempttojudgehisworkwithanycriticaldetachment。Icanonlyaffirmthathewasamanofabso露teintegrityofmind。Heneverwrotehispoems(assomanywar—poetsdid)tomaketheeffectofapersonalgesture。

WilfredOwenwasbornatOswestryon18thMarch1893。HewaseducatedattheBirkenheadInstitute,andmatricutedatLondonUniversityin1910。
In1913heobtainedaprivatetutorshipnearBordeaux,whereheremaineduntil1915。DuringthisperiodhebecameacquaintedwiththeeminentFrenchpoet,LaurentTailhade,towhomheshowedhisearlyverses,andfromwhomhereceivedconsiderableencouragement。
